The cold and wet weather broke and we had a nice weather this weekend. This afternoon I went out for a bike ride, possibly the last one of the year. I rode north, which is generally uphill, figuring I could coast a lot on the return trip. The trip north was easy. I rode up to Lexington and Tanglewood (6.7 miles), rode a mile or so east, then turned south to go home. At that point I realized why the trip north had been so easy: There was a south wind, hence the warm weather. At that point I knew I had to pay for it. The ride home was long and hard.

Homeward Bound
The rain let up some this afternoon, which made packing bearable. We are heading back to the Twin Cities with a load of wet canvas and other gear.
How long can you tread water?
We had a good night’s sleep. For me it was one of the best night’s sleep ever at a colgaffneyis event. We were woken by the breakfast bell at 8AM, followed immediately by loud thunderclaps. It has been raining hard ever since.
Fortunately, our site (Jack McGowan’s farm) has a lodge house which we are able to use. We have retreated there until the rain stops, or we have to pack and go home anyway. We have some indoor activities to keep us busy. E.g., I gave a brief talk on the Gaelic languages which was well received.
Plan B
At this minute clergy and worship committees at liturgical churches in this area (Twin Cities, Minnesota) are rearranging their plans for the morning: Snow is falling. I doubt there will be many outdoor Palm Sunday processions today.
Some churches may try to move their processions completely inside. How well this will work depends on the individual church. When liturgy argues with architecture, architecture always wins.
Three Day Weekend
Mercury in free fall
I am not referring to the planet, although that is also (and always) true.
I posted before about the temperatures on December 15 and this past Tuesday.
This morning I saw a thermometer reading -22oF/-30oC.
However my car, a ’95 Ford Escort, was still able to start. There was a bus waiting at the Park-and-ride, and it stopped downtown across the street from a Skyway entrance. So my total exposure to the weather was probably under 5 minutes.
I just checked the forecast. It may be a full 17oF/9oC warmer when I go home!
The weather this morning
-18oF/-28oC. The conversion to Celsius is a simple formula, but if you are a complete mathophobe xkcd can help: NSFW language
