From my visit to the site in the summer of 1971. Troy VI was destroyed about 1250BC and rebuilt as Troy VIIA, using a lot of the previous city’s structures. It was destroyed in turn 1180-1190BC. The destruction of one those cities may be the inspiration of the Homeric epics. Troy VIIA shows more evidence of being destroyed by warfare, but the date is problematic. It was destroyed about the same time as the Mycenaean cities of Greece. This was part of the general catastrophe at the end of Bronze Age. According to legend the Trojan war took place a couple generations earlier.
