Hop harvest in Roseville
mia_mcdavid, zordok, and I harvested hops from the vine we have growing by our back deck:
We filled seven one-gallon freezer bags—hops freeze quite well, then we enjoyed some of a previous year’s crop, suitably processed:
I froze three bags of the current harvest and zordok took away the rest. He is doing more brewing these days than I am.
Never too late
Saturday afternoon (when it was not raining) I was doing some woodwork outside our tent at colgaffneyis muster. One of our newer members came by to look at what I was doing and chat. He is an older fellow (mid-late 40’s I would guess). He saw what I was doing and said he wished he could actually do stuff like that. I told him that I will turn 58 next month and I have only gotten serious about this in the last 10 years.
I hope he got the message.
Cherry Stout II — bottled
I bottled the cherry stout that I started on December 22. Final gravity 1.024. This seems absurdly high, but my final gravities are often high, and the initial gravity for this was 1.070. Alcohol content 6.2%. mia_mcdavid and I tasted the little bit left over from bottling and it seems promising.
Three day weekend
Unlike a lot of people, I actually worked on Friday. The office was very quiet. Then I took three days off.
Brewing Notes — Cherry Stout II — update
The wort has been been chilled and transferred to the primary fermenter. The yeast has been pitched. Initial gravity 1.070. I made it up to nearly 6 gallons because of expected losses (cherries) at racking.
There was a messy boil-over at the start of the boil, but otherwise the process went OK.
Brewing Notes — Cherry Stout II
Winter is really here and I am brewing another cherry stout. This will be similar to the some I did in January, but a little stronger. Continue reading
