Whatever other remodeling projects we undertake in this house, we are not removing the popcorn ceilings in any of the other rooms. Right, mia_mcdavid??

Towards the New Year
Sunday Cleaning
As mia_mcdavid wrote, we did indeed clean out the rumpus room today. I had hoped to make some progress there, but we did far more than I had expected. It really is looking sort of decent, as garage/workrooms go. The next step for me is to clean off my workbenches, both the old one that came with the house and the one that I built here specifically for woodworking with hand tools. For that I will need to find and/or make some storage. I have some ideas about how to do that, but I probably will not get much done until next weekend.
One way or another, almost all weekend I have been doing things with mia_mcdavid. It has been good.
“Six Days shalt thou labor, as much as thou art able….”
“The Seventh the same, and clean out the stable.”
The Down Side of Cleaning House
mia_mcdavid, James, and I are all going to colgaffneyis camp at the White Oak Rendezvous this weekend. James has missed the last couple Clann events and some of his gear needs work. Mia wants to repair his breeches, and she called me to ask where they were. I replied that they were in a pile of my stuff on top of the bookcase under the window in in our bedroom.
She replied “No, there is nothing there. You cleaned it.” I had in fact cleaned off the top of the book case, and everything else on my side of the bedroom a few weeks ago. However, the piles of stuff had been there so long that they were still fixed in my mental image of the bedroom.
Now I have to remember where I put the breeches. I am sure it seemed like a very logical place at the time :-)>
Household chores and other things
Good Day
mia_mcdavid and I spent some time this morning on post-snowstorm house maintenance. We cleared some snow from the deck, and unplugged a downspout that had frozen up. A heat gun and boiling water did the job here.
After that Mia went out to visit redwingkali. I ran some errands, then went home for the rest of the day. I did some hand sewing on a 17th century style coat/doublet to wear at colgaffneyis events, while listening to the Met Opera broadcast(Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra) on Public Radio. I got a lot done, and enjoyed the music. Exactly the kind of afternoon I wanted. Pleasant, productive, and cheap.
After Mia got home I made some hot-and-sour soup for dinner, following (more or less) a recipe we have used for many years. As usual, I had to greatly increase the spice levels for our taste, but after that it was very good. All in all a quiet, but satisfying day.
Saturday
It does not feel like we did a lot today, but we finished something that I have been wanting to do for over a year. We rerouted the drainage for the sump pump so that the pipe does not freeze in the winter. It was a straightforward job with PVC pipe, and it worked just like it was supposed to. We tested the pump this evening and it drained correctly without leaking. A project completed, a worry gone.
After that we went to a wedding in south Minneapolis of two friends from colgaffneyis. It was at the home of c_nocturnum and 3stitches officiated. He does a very nice liturgy. This was very pleasant, but we could not stay long at the reception since we had to take James and his friend Matthew (like James an aspie) out to dinner–it is James’s birthday. They get along very well, but an intense conversation between two aspies with shared obsessions can be difficult for others. Fortunately, mia_mcdavid and I had each other. We went to the Macaroni Grill in Rosedale Mall, which has some very nice food that we can appreciate, while also having some basics that James (seriously palate-challenged) will eat happily. We all enjoyed it.
