Western tourists renewing vows unwittingly receive malediction in Maldives
A foreign couple who believed they were renewing their marriage vows in a quaint, local-style ceremony in the Maldives were in fact being verbally abused by locals for LOLs.
Maldives police to probe foul-mouthed wedding ceremony
Police in the Maldives are to launch an investigation after a foreign couple who thought they were renewing marriage vows were in fact being subjected to a torrent of abuse.
A video has emerged of the unidentified Western couple taking part in the ceremony at the Vilu Reef resort.
Instead of words of blessing, the celebrant calls the couple “swine” and “infidels” in the local language.
From our host in Albert Lea this past weekend:
It’s winter in Minnesota
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At twenty-five below.Oh, how I love Minnesota
When the snow’s up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I’ll hang around
I could never leave Minnesota
‘Cause I’m frozen to the ground!!
mia_mcdavid and her mother are in the northern Chicago suburbs, staying with a family friend. They fly to Dublin tonight.
I got J up and off to school yesterday and today, without too much whining on his part.
Last night I started a sewing project for my colgaffneyis kit. I had been procrastinating about it for months. Not a big job, but the fitting is fussy.
We might have visitors this weekend. Some old (30+ years) friends were talking about stopping by on their way between South Dakota and Michigan. That was a couple weeks ago, before I went to Colorado, and they have not called back, unless they talked to Mia while I was away. So there may be a van with Michigan plates sitting in my driveway tonight.
I took Mom shopping this morning. Her interest in food has increased quite noticeably in the days I have been here.
I am about to board my plane home. The Col. Springs airport has good wi-fi!

I have heard, and told, countless variations on this for the past four decades. But we were joking…. At least, I think most of us were ;-)>
I made my travel arrangements for Colorado Springs–going out Thursday morning, returning Sunday afternoon (assuming no new medical crisis). No problems arranging this at the office, to my considerable relief.
Later last night mia_mcdavid and I watched ice cream being made with liquid nitrogen , then ate some of the results. It was a good, rich ice cream.
Afterwards we looked in on a couple parties. I watched some more swordfighting demos by Aegis Academy, then joined Mia at the music circle. This was really quite dead, although we had another nice talk with Frank Hayes when he stopped by briefly. We got to bed about 1 AM. I think James came back to the room about 2:30.
Slept past 9 this morning. Not a lot of convention for me and James, since Mia took us to the airport at 11. This worked out OK, although there was about 1/2 hour of hideous traffic on I-94.
James and I returned home precisely according to plan, again changing planes at O’Hare. James handled the weekend’s air travel very well. I am quite pleased with him.
His laptop computer did not do so well. It was very slow. Perhaps a virus had finally gotten into to it. Or perhaps, as a Windows machine, it was uncomfortable at a Linux event :-)> My little Nokia 770, which runs Debian Linux, did just fine….
This was one of the best cons I have been to in a long time. I need to reflect on why that was. It was quite different from what we have here in Minnesota–what about these differences appealed to me?
Mia is driving home, and is spending the night with family friends in Chicagoland.
