Out of my hands

One of the parts of my job is handling database server replacements. Specifically, when a computer gets old we move the databases to new hardware. The trick is to do this without a lot of interference with the users’ work. So these events are scheduled for the weekends. Sunday is preferred because full backups are made of every database on Saturday night, so we have protection in case of failure. A lot planning and prep work has to be done in advance, much of which involves people in other areas in the organization.

One of these events is scheduled for this Sunday. However, there are two remaining tasks that have to be accomplished today, neither of which I can do myself. The people responsible for them are not in my area, and do not report to my supervisor or his manager (that manager). Apparently they do not share the sense of urgency I feel.

If we cannot do it this weekend, we will have to do it some other weekend soon–management does not want this to drag on. It has already been postponed once. That means

I have been exchanging e-mails about one of these issues, and am now in the middle of an IM session on the other. No idea if this will work, and nothing I can do.

Update on the Travelers, and those left behind

mia_mcdavid and her mother are in the northern Chicago suburbs, staying with a family friend. They fly to Dublin tonight.

I got J up and off to school yesterday and today, without too much whining on his part.

Last night I started a sewing project for my colgaffneyis kit. I had been procrastinating about it for months. Not a big job, but the fitting is fussy.

We might have visitors this weekend. Some old (30+ years) friends were talking about stopping by on their way between South Dakota and Michigan. That was a couple weeks ago, before I went to Colorado, and they have not called back, unless they talked to Mia while I was away. So there may be a van with Michigan plates sitting in my driveway tonight.

Worn out

Rather less going on then usual. colgaffneyis has no shows in September, so there is not the rush to get ready for the next event. Gaeltacht Minnesota is in the middle of a three week break. All this is just as well. The continual threatening atmosphere at work is wearing me down. Furthermore, allergies have been interfering with my sleep. They are hitting me much harder than in the past several summers. There are several projects I want to work on at home, but it is hard to find the energy to proceed with them.

Sunday

We went back to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church today. The Rector was out, but that was really OK–We got to see how the parish worked without her. Answer: Just fine. That is the way it should be. LeeAnne is a brilliant preacher and obviously well-loved in the parish, but the church needs to be able to get along when she is elsewhere.

After we got home mia_mcdavid took a nap, while I worked on some of colgaffneyis tent poles–we had several equipment failures at Perham. I did everything I could–the next step is a policy decision by Mia and the Tinker. I also made some progress on cleaning my workbench.
