As part of our living history work in colgaffneyis we demonstrate how to start a fire without matches. This can be very difficult to do. However, some people are able achieve it without even trying:

Saturday night and Sunday
My job requires that I occasionally work on evenings and weekends, doing things that cannot be done in normal business hours. Fortunately, in most cases I can do the job remotely by logging on to the County network from home. That helps a lot. Also, in most cases the job is goes according to plan and does not take too long. Last night…well, I am glad the first was true. Continue reading
Friday night
I stayed late at work then took the train to south Minneapolis for colgaffneyis Night at the Pub. I got to Merlin’s Rest early, so I stopped in at the hardware store next door. I found some large old-fashioned (tapered square shank) auger bits there. I bought three, one 1-1/8″ and two 1-1/4″.
The company at Merlin’s Rest was pleasant, but I have had better evenings there. It seemed a lot noisier than usual. My tolerance for crowded loud bars and similar settings, never very high, seems to be declining as I get older.

Programming Languages
jeff_duntemann pointed me to A Brief, Incomplete, and Mostly Wrong History of Programming Languages.
I was thinking about composing a suitable entry for APL, the first programming language I used professionally (1977-1984), but it is late and I need to go to bed.
Another day, another fair
Today I spent the afternoon at Shepherd’s Harvest. mia_mcdavid was a vendor there She had a successful weekend. I minded the store (literally!) so she could take a couple breaks, and helped her with teardown and packing the car at the end of the day.
Scottish Fair
I spent the day with colgaffneyis at the Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games. It was a good time, but exhausting. Continue reading
Apheresis
I made a platelet donation (apheresis) at the Red Cross this afternoon. BP 122/80. I walked there from work and back to the bus stop afterwards, so I got some exercise in the process.
More applied electrochemistry
I derusted another file tonight by electrolysis. The setup was topologically and electrically identical to Sunday’s, but the file was much bigger. So I put everything flat in a large, low tub. The current was a little lower (4 Amps), but it got the job done.
Sorry, no pics tonight:
- I was doing this along with several other things.
- mia_mcdavid was using the camera for fabric stuff.
