The limits of being period correct

Someone Call a Pitsawyer

After 2 feet of ripping the 5″-thick cherry, I gave up. I am generally a stubborn person, but the sawing was too slow-going to be practical. It was going to take an hour of ripping for each slab.

Senior Editor Glen Huey came into the shop. He raised one eyebrow, but he didn’t say anything about the sweat drips all over the slabs.

“I’m gonna cheat,” I said, “and I need your help.”

We humped each slab onto the band saw. In less than five minutes the deed was done. I can rationalize this a million ways: This is work for a pitsawyer. The lumberyard would have dressed these slabs for the pre-industrial woodworker.

But the bottom line was that ripping these slab[s] wasn’t fun. And that’s where I drew the line. The purists can feel free to throw stones now.

Private weekend

Except this morning at church, the only significant human interactions I had this weekend were with my family. However, there were plenty of those. It was good.

I did a lot of decluttering over the weekend. I took 10 grocery bags of books to Goodwill this afternoon. Tonight we had 7 grocery bags filled with recycling beyond what fit in the official city recycling basket. Usually we have one or two.

We have finally unpacked from last weekend with colgaffneyis at Big Island. We are mostly recovered from the installation of the new windows in the house. We had to get everything out of the way on the inside so the installer could do their inside work. I have put things back together in our bedroom, my desk area in the basement, and the adjacent shelves by the fireplace.

Great four day weekend!

I had planned to take Friday and Monday off to accomodate colgaffneyis show in Aberdeen, South Dakota. That was cancelled, to my profound relief. However, I took the vacation days anyway. It was great.

I got two extra days to sleep in. I had a lot of time for woodworking and brewing (see previous posts). There was good drinking and eating: Belgian beer Friday evening, the St. Paul farmers’ market Saturday, and an Indian lunch today. We did see some of our colgaffneyis friends at Merlin’s Rest, the group’s monthly “Night at the Pub” later Friday night. On Sunday mia_mcdavid and I had a good time at church and did useful work there, followed by a pleasant outing with our son Tom. Irish class Monday night was interesting and inspiring.

Best of all, this was a lot of time spent with just mia_mcdavid.
