Weekend work again
Saturday
It does not feel like we did a lot today, but we finished something that I have been wanting to do for over a year. We rerouted the drainage for the sump pump so that the pipe does not freeze in the winter. It was a straightforward job with PVC pipe, and it worked just like it was supposed to. We tested the pump this evening and it drained correctly without leaking. A project completed, a worry gone.
After that we went to a wedding in south Minneapolis of two friends from colgaffneyis. It was at the home of c_nocturnum and 3stitches officiated. He does a very nice liturgy. This was very pleasant, but we could not stay long at the reception since we had to take James and his friend Matthew (like James an aspie) out to dinner–it is James’s birthday. They get along very well, but an intense conversation between two aspies with shared obsessions can be difficult for others. Fortunately, mia_mcdavid and I had each other. We went to the Macaroni Grill in Rosedale Mall, which has some very nice food that we can appreciate, while also having some basics that James (seriously palate-challenged) will eat happily. We all enjoyed it.
Earning my Pay
I just got off the phone, and off my employer’s computer system. After relaxing until 10 PM the phone rang. I found myself talking to one of my fellow employees, and at least two consultants from IBM. It sounded like the IBM folks were from North America, but these days they could be anywhere on the planet.
What is odd is that this was not a case of some 24×7 computer system that had crashed and must be fixed now. This system is still under development. Those other guys must be really feeling the heat to be working on it at 10:30PM on Friday.
I did my part, taking care of some database stuff they needed. I forwarded some log files to the others. I think I can go to bed now. Don’t know how late the rest of them will be working.
Cutting back
We skipped colgaffneyis Night at the Pub this evening. Too many events. Tomorrow we are going to a wedding in the afternoon. However, we are going to skip the festivities afterwards. It is James’s birthday, and we are taking him and his friend out to dinner. It won’t be quite as lively as the wedding crowd, but it will be fine. mia_mcdavid, good food, and some wine are more than enough to make a party for me.
Who put the sign outside my cubicle?
…the one that says “Office Hours: 4-5 PM”
I can’t see it, but apparently everybody else in the office can. In the late afternoon I get a parade of visitors coming by to ask technical questions. They are very nice, and the questions are intelligent, but I wish some of them would come earlier in the day. I don’t want to miss my bus home!
Too Much….
Stress on the job all day…Breakdowns and repairs around the house….a seemingly continuous whirl of meetings and gatherings of colgaffeyis (and this is the offseason)…family obligations….Something has to give….
