Weekend work again
Earning my Pay
I just got off the phone, and off my employer’s computer system. After relaxing until 10 PM the phone rang. I found myself talking to one of my fellow employees, and at least two consultants from IBM. It sounded like the IBM folks were from North America, but these days they could be anywhere on the planet.
What is odd is that this was not a case of some 24×7 computer system that had crashed and must be fixed now. This system is still under development. Those other guys must be really feeling the heat to be working on it at 10:30PM on Friday.
I did my part, taking care of some database stuff they needed. I forwarded some log files to the others. I think I can go to bed now. Don’t know how late the rest of them will be working.
Protected: Intensive Work Day
A pleasant duty
As some of you know, I am doing web work for my upcoming Carleton College class reunion. Today I sent this e-mail to my contact in the college computer center:
Belated, but sincere thanks for that session in October when you taught me the basics of using Reason. After some delay due to personal circumstances I have finally begun work on our class web site. It is proving to be easy and fun. I have a few pages up now, including our class Zoobook in gallery format (one of my classmates did the hard part of scanning the book and separating all the 480 images). My classmates like the way the pages look.
The only problem is that it will be hard to go back to HTML when I have to work on another site.
Thanks again–that was one of the best computer education sessions I have ever had in my 30 years of work in the field.
EDIT: I have since found out that my Carleton contact is on LJ as wordswoman.
This week
The week has been relatively quiet. Work has been mostly OK. I have been able to quite a bit of useful work without too many management hassles.
colgaffneyis dance on Wednesday was pleasant although rather low-key; only six people showed.
While mia_mcdavid was out today I had a lot of shop time. The shaving horse is ready now: The only things I have left to do are cosmetic.
Mia and I have been sitting in front of a fire this evening. She has been reading. I have engaged in the less traditional activities of
- Trying to fix an old computer.
- Adding software to my Nokia 770.
- Writing this post on the same Nokia.
Quote of the Day
From Paul Flessner, VP of Database Development at Microsoft, referring to the 2003 SQL Server Slammer Worm:
“Note to self: Career advice–Don’t bring down the Internet. I got calls from Presidents of countries I didn’t know were countries”
And in fact Microsoft SQL Server security does seem to have improved considerably since then.
FWIW, Slammer had no affect on any of the systems I was responsible for at the time.
