St. Luke’s in October 2026

Once again Mia I left Windycon about 9AM Sunday morning to worship at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Evanston. The church is be doing well. Unlike last year, there was no outside crisis to threaten it. The Rector was absent that Sunday, but another priest presided.

The lessons for the day were Exodus 32:1-14 (the Golden Calf), Philippians 4:1-9, and Matthew 22:1-14 (the wedding banquet where the invited guests did not come). The preacher, a layman I don’t know, just talked about Philippians. I had no problem with what he said, but I really felt he should have said something about the Old Testament and the Gospel. The Golden Calf is a great story and really should not be ignored. Likewise the Gospel. In particular I would like to learn more about verses 11-14. That seems like a very harsh punishment for violating a dress code.

As I noted two years ago, St. Luke’s omits the Filioque from the Nicene Creed, while our current parish, St. Clement’s in St. Paul was inconsistent in its usage. However, lately St. Clement’s has been omitting it, which I prefer. I don’t know if they will continue that when the liturgy is changed for Advent.
