An Fhondúireacht

NA SÍCEASTARAITHE

Léigh mé an leabhar seo as Bearla arís agus arís eile, nuair a bhí mé óg, fadó fadó. Tá aistriúchán Gaeilge anois ann.
Léigh mé an píosa seo agus d’aistrigh mé an píosa ar ais go dtí Béarla. Ní leigh mé an Bearla bunúsach roimh chríochnaigh mé an obair

I read this book in English several times when I was young, long ago. There is now an Irish translation. I read this piece and translated it [sort of]
back into English. I did not read the original English before I finished the work.

TRANTOR-… I dtús an triú mílaois déag, tháinig an fhorbairt
seo a fhad lena barrphointe. Ó tharla go raibh lucht rialtais an
Impire ag cur fúthu ansin leis na céadta glúin, agus an áit féin suite
i lár Bhealach na Bó Finne, i measc na ndomhan ba mhó
daonra agus tionsclaíochta ar fud na hImpireachta bhí Trantor ar
an bpláinéad ba dhaonmhaire, b’iontaí dá raibh ann ó tháinig an
cine daonna féin chun saoil…
TRANTOR-… In the beginning of the 13th millenium this long development came to a peak.
Since the government of the Emperor had been settled there for hundreds of generations and
the place itself was located in the center of the Milky Way, among the worlds with the most population and industry in all the Empire Trantor was the most populous,
it was remarkable if the human race came to live there…
At the beginning of the thirteenth millenium, this tendency reached its climax. As the center of the Imperial Goverment for unbroken hundreds of
generations and located, as it was, toward the central regions of the Galaxy among the most densely populated and industrially advanced worlds of the system, it could
scarcely help being the densest and richest clot of humanity the Race had ever seen.
Bhí an pláinéad ag dul chun uirbeachais go dtí gur sroicheadh
na teorainneacha. Ní raibh ar dhroim an domhain seo ach aon
mhórchathair amhain, trí chéad milliún cillemeadar cearnacha ar
achar, agus níos mó ná daichead míle milliún de dhaoine ina gcónaí
ansin. An chuid ba mhó de na sluaite síoraí seo, bhí siad ag obair leo
ag coinneáil chóras riaracháin na hImpireachta ag imeacht, agus iad
féin á gur thar a n-acmhainn ag an gcúram seo. (Na deacrachtaí a
bhí ag baint le cursaí an riarcháin éifeachtúil i réimeas na Lag-
Impirí deireanacha, bhí a dtionchar féin acu ar mheath na
hlmpireachta.) Bhí cabhlaigh mhóra de spáslonga ag iompar
táirgíocht iomlán fiche pláinéad talmhaíochta go bord bricfeasta
Trantor, lá i ndiaidh lae… Ó bhí siad go hiomlán i dtuilleamaí na
bpláinéad eile le haghaidh bia agus riachtanaisí eile, ní bheadh gléas
a gcosanta ag muintir Trantor dá bhfágfaí faoi imshuí is faoi léigear
iad. I mílaois dheireanach na hImpireachta, is iomaí Impire a
d’fhoghlaim an ceacht seo, agus réabhlóid ag teach sna sálaí ag
réabhlóid eile. De réir a chéile, níor fágadh de pholasí eachtrach an
Impire ach tsíoriarrach le súil agus smacht a choinneáil ar chuisle
seo na beatha…

CICLIPÉID NA BÓ FINNE.

The planet was urbanized until it reached the limits.
On the surface of this world only there was only one big city,
three hundred million square kilometers in area, and and more than forty thousand million people living there.
Most of these everlasting crowds were working at keeping the administrative system of the empire going,
and that responsibility was beyond their resources. (the difficulties of keeping the administration effective at the end of the regime of a weak empire
was itself an influence on the decline of the empire) A great fleet of spaceships carried the agricultural production of twenty planets to Trantor’s breakfast table,
day after day…Since they were totally dependent on the other planets for food and other necessities,
The people had no arrangement for protection if Trantor were blockaded or if they were besieged.
In the last millenium of the Empire, many emperors learned this lesson, and revolution came on the heels of another revolution.
Increasingly nothing was left of the foreign policy of the Emperor but continual effort in the hope of keeping control of this pulse of life.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE MILKY WAY

Its urbanization, progressing steadily, had finally reached the ultimate. All the land surface of Trantor, 75,000,000 square miles in extent,
was a single city. The population, at its height, was well in excess of forty billions. This enormous population was devoted
almost entirely to the administrative necessities of Empire, and found themselves all too
few for the complications of the taak. (It is to be remembered that the impossibility of
proper administration of the Galactic Empire under the uninspired leadership of the later
Emperors was a considerable factor in the Fall.) Daily, fleets of ships in the tens of
thousands brought the produce of twenty agricultural worlds to the dinner tables of
Trantor….

Its dependence upon the outer worlds for food and, indeed, for all necessities of life,
made Trantor increasingly vulnerable to conquest by siege. In the last millenium of the
Empire, the monotonously numerous revolts made Emperor after Emperor conscious of
this, and Imperial policy became little more than protection of Trantor’s delicate
jugular vein….
