The family name

mia_mcdavid sent me a link to the Scottish Court of Session. I went to the search page and entered “McDavid”. More than a page of hits were returned. The list begins

RefNo Title Date AccessStatus
AD14/28/354 Precognition against Peter Jardine, Peter McDavid, James Lyons, Andrew Hotson for the crime of assault 1828 Open
AD14/41/112 Precognition against John McDavid for the crime of theft by housebreaking at Duke Street, Leith 1841 Open
AD14/44/289 Precognition against John McDavid, Daniel McDavid for the crime of theft by housebreaking, habit and repute at Old Broughton Road, Edinburgh 1844 Open

AD14/71/278 Precognition against Nancy Tierney, Ellen McDavid, Florence Johnston, Margaret Shaw for the crime of robbery, or theft, habit and repute, and previous conviction 1871 Open

I guess “precognition” here is a legal term, not related to ESP.

Looking at the details, I found occupations listed for my family name included “journeyman nailer”, “carter”, and “labourer”. Ellen McDavid was listed simply as “prisoner at Edinburgh”.

The list concluded on a more honorable, if sad note:

SC70/8/795/52 Will of S/41156 Private John Rae McDAVID, 6th Bn.or 1/6th, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). Cause of death: Died of Wounds, France, France and Flanders, 12 April 1918 3 April 1918 Open
