Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé #6 — A Road Trip to the South

American Roads

Maidhc Dainín finally earns enough time for a vacation, and he and his friend Frank (who works long hours in construction) decide to take a road trip, to see a bit of America. They have some connections in the South from co-workers, but a lot of their trip is more or less on a whim. As such, they decide to head for St. Louis first, and this first paragraph is just an amusing aside.

Ba mhór an difríocht a bhí idir an mbóthar go rabhamair ag taisteal agus an bóthar ó Dhaingean go Trá Lí.
É chomh díreach le riail faid do radhairce agus ar gach taobh dínn páirceanna móra cruithneachtan agus arbhair.
Ní raibh cnoc ná maolchnoc le feiscint ach talamh méith mín agus ba dhóigh leat
gurbh amhlaidh a bhí sé leibhéalta ag meaisín mór éigin.

Ba mhór an difríocht a bhí idir an mbóthar go rabhamair ag taisteal There was a big difference between the road we were travelling on
É chomh díreach le riail faid do radhairce agus ar gach taobh dínn páirceanna móra cruithneachtan agus arbhair. As far as could be seen like a rule that there were fields of wheat and corn on each side
Ní raibh cnoc ná maolchnoc le feiscint ach talamh méith mín There was not a hill or knoll visible, only fine fertile land
ba dhóigh leat gurbh amhlaidh a bhí sé leibhéalta ag meaisín mór éigin. You would think that it was leveled by some big machine.
In the Pub

As it turns out, later in their trip they will end up in rural areas where they decide the roads are much worse
than they are in Ireland.

At any rate, early on in their trip they end up at a sort of B&B near Memphis,
one that has a pub attached to it. After a hearty meal, they head over to the pub and hang out with the locals,
and learn something of their views and customs, particularly their feelings toward black people.

Warning: some of this story is a bit grim. After you’ve figured it out, though, it is worth some reflection on the notion that for many a year, high-school students in Ireland would be reading this depiction of America in preparation for the ardteist.

  • Dheineamair néal codlata tar éis an bhéile agus chuamair isteach sa tábhairne a bhain leis an lóistín ansin.
Ní raibh ach seisear suite ag an mbeár. Cuma dheas ghlan air, urlár adhmaid agus cuma pub tuaithe air.
Chuireamair comhrá ar chúpla duine de mhuintir na háite a bhí suite le hais linn. Ba é mo thuairim tar éis tamall
a thabhairt ag caint leo ná gur daoine macánta cneasta ab ea iad gan puinn de mhaoin an tsaoil acu.
Rud amháin nár thaitin liom mar gheall orthu, áfach, is é sin gur léiríodar go raibh an ghráin dhearg acu ar an gcine ghorm.
Faoi mar a dheineas go minic cheana thosnaíos ag ceistiú agus ag fiafraí des na daoine
a bhí sa bheár an raibh cothrom na féinne á thabhairt acu dos na daoine dubha.

Dheineamair néal codlata tar éis an bhéile agus chuamair isteach sa tábhairne a bhain leis an lóistín ansin. We took a nap after the meal and went back in the pub where we taken lodgings.
Ní raibh ach seisear suite ag an mbeár. Only six people were sitting at the bar.
Cuma dheas ghlan air, urlár adhmaid agus cuma pub tuaithe air. It seemed pleasingly clean, wooden floors and a rural pub look
Chuireamair comhrá ar chúpla duine de mhuintir na háite a bhí suite le hais linn. We had a conversation with a couple of local people seated back of us
Ba é mo thuairim tar éis tamall It was my opinion after a while

Rud amháin nár thaitin liom mar gheall orthu, one thing I did not like on their account
    áfach however
is é sin gur léiríodar go raibh an ghráin dhearg acu ar an gcine ghorm. they made clear they had a red hatred for the black race
Faoi mar a dheineas go minic cheana thosnaíos ag ceistiú agus ag fiafraí des na daoine a bhí sa bheár As I was often already questioning and asking the people that were in the bar
an raibh cothrom na féinne á thabhairt acu dos na daoine dubha whether the black people being given a fair deal
  • ‘O tá,’ arsa fear amháin, agus gáire magúil ar a aghaidh. ‘Nuair a thaistealaíonn siad ar an mbus
cuirimid na hainmhithe sin ar fad siar go dtí deireadh.’

gáire magúil ar a aghaidh mocking smile on his face
Nuair a thaistealaíonn siad ar an mbus cuirimid na hainmhithe sin ar fad siar go dtí deireadh. When they travel by bus we put all the animals in the back until the end
  • Thosnaíos á gceistiú ansin mar gheall ar nósa mhuintir na háite agus mar gheall ar cárbh as a shíolraíodar.
Bhí cuid mhaith Éireannach ina measc,
a dúradar, daoine a bhí ag obair ar na bóithre iarainn fadó agus a chuir fúthu sa cheantar agus go raibh a sliocht ann anois.
Bhí sin le tuiscint go maith as na sloinnte a bhí ar chuid acu. Siar san oíche bhí slua deas bailithe isteach sa tábhairne agus
    canúint láidir na
hillbillies le cloisint ar gach taobh dínn. Mura mbeadh an taithí a bhí agam bheith ag
éisteacht leo i Sears Roebuck ní bheadh aon tuiscint agam orthu, a déarfainn,
mar bhí focail áirithe acu nár scríobhadh in aon fhoclóir Béarla.

Thosnaíos á gceistiú ansin mar gheall ar nósa mhuintir na háite Then I started questioning about the customs of the local people

canúint láidir na hillbillies le cloisint ar gach taobh dínn. and a strong hillbilly accent heard all around us
Mura mbeadh an taithí a bhí agam bheith ag éisteacht leo i Sears Roebuck ní bheadh aon tuiscint agam orthu, a déarfainn, Without the experience of listening to them at Sears Roebuck I would not have understood them, I would say [p hab]

Chuir fear an tí gloine os a chomhair agus líon suas í d’fhuiscí. Rug sé ar an ngloine agus chaith sé siar d’aon iarracht
