The last few days

Nothing terribly exciting….

Wednesday evening — Dance for colgaffneyis was cancelled again. I took advantage of the opportunity to get in another workout at the Health Club.

Thursday evening — colgaffneyis‘s Sword Guild met, for the first time since October. We met at Corcoran Center in south Minneapolis. For a while we had an audience of small children from the neighborhood, but they got restless after a while. We were ignoring their cries of “Off with his head!” and not leaving any blood on the floor. At that point the Corcoran staff persuaded them to leave. Attendance was light, as usual: twolodge, my son James, and myself. In addition to the basic drills we did some cautious sparring. James is getting better–his youthful speed got past my guard more than once. twolodge is a decade younger than I am, three inches taller, and about 50 pounds heavier, with predictable results. Still, I don’t think I disgraced myself.

I noticed some nicks on the blade of my sword, and that the grip is slightly loose. It has been working hard during these drills and needs some maintenance.

Friday — I was late leaving work. There was a data transfer crisis with some security issues. Eventually the two consultants and I came up with a solution and everybody could go home. One of the consultants is named Osama Rashid (good guy–I have written about him here before), so I can say “I helped Osama get around security.” If I suddenly disappear you will know that Homeland Security reads LJ.

Despite the success, I was rather worn out. We got Tom to the Respite camp and then went to colgaffneyis‘s Pub Night. I enjoyed it, but it would have been better with more rest.

Saturday — A good night’s sleep, then more of colgaffneyis–pike drill near the airport. There was a good turnout and it went well. We all stayed around to chat for nearly an hour afterwards. I then went to Tandy Leather for some supplies, then to the health club for another workout. Afterwards I went on the search for a strange screwdriver that I have written about elsewhere. In the evening I cooked a pasta dinner, which mia_mcdavid and I ate while watching a couple TV shows we had taped earlier in the week. The episode of Boston Legal was uncomfortably close to home–it was about a guy with Asperger’s syndrome, which is the disability James has. They described it quite well.

Sunday — Another good night’s sleep–this is what respite is all about. Then Church in the late morning. Much of the afternoon and early evening was taken up with the newsletter for colgaffneyis. I picked up Tom from the respite camp about 4:30. As usual, he had a good time there. He was very cheerful and cooperative, unlike the last couple times I did this. In fact, we had no trouble with him all evening, and he went to sleep quite happily.
