St. Luke’s in November 2024

As we have done on several previous visits to Chicagoland, Mia and I left Windycon about 9AM Sunday, missing the con events of that day. Once again we went to worship at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Evanston. This is what we did after after Capricon in February of this year and Windycon last year and in 2021. We are always glad to be back there, see old friends, and see that the parish is thriving.

St. Luke’s is a very large church, but there was a big crowd. Afterwards we learned that our current home parish of St. Clement’s also was quite full that Sunday. Apparently this was partly because it was the Sunday after the election. Many people on the losing side were looking for a safe and friendly place to gather. I suspect something like that was also happening at St. Luke’s, since the two churches feel very similar to me.

One difference I noticed is that St. Luke’s omits the Filioque from the Nicene Creed, with a note in the bulletin that this is now allowed in the Episcopal Church. St. Clement’s usually includes it, following the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer, although they have omitted it in some alternative seasonal liturgies. I think the arguments for omitting it are sound, but I am not going to argue about it. My interest in historical reenactment does not extend to reviving this medieval controversy.
