Irish class, April 7, 2008

The first exercise was to take three scrambled sentences from an article
in and put them back in order, without using our dictionaries.

The general form is:

  1. Verb
  2. Subject or subject Phrase. The noun will be in the nominative case.
  3. One of more of:
    • Direct object
    • Preposition phrase
    • Adverbial Phrase
  4. Possibly a dependent clause. Look for go, nach or a+verbal noun. Then analyze as above.

It is a lot harder than it sounds, after step 1.

  1. éirí­ as Taoiseach phost D’fhógair mbeadh sé ag a ar 6 Aibreán an

    Vocabulary
    D’fhógair annnounced (p. of fógair)
    mbeadh would be(subj. of bí­, pron. “mukh”
    a phost his job
    ag éirí­ leaving (here), rising, become. vn. of éirí­gh
    as out (prep.)
    ag éirí­ as a phost leaving his job

    Notes: ar and as are prepositions,

    D’fhógair an Taoiseach go mbeadh ag éirí­ as a phost ar 6 Aibreán.
    The Taoiseach announced that he would be leaving his job on April 6.

  2. Lucht é Bertie an Oibre gur Taoiseach maith Ahern Dúirt

    Vocabulary
    ceannaire leader
    gur was (dependent clause copula)
    lucht group (of people)
    obair, gs oibre work
    Lucht Oibre Labour Party

    Dúirt ceannaire an Lucht Oibre gur Taoiseach maith Bertie Ahern.

    “The leader of the Labour Party said that Bertie Ahern was a good Taoiseach.”

  3. Ahern náisiún seirbhí­s Rinne don agus stát don iomlán

    Vocabulary
    don ← do-an to the

    Rinne Ahern seirbhí­s don stát agus don náisiún iomlán.
    “Ahern did service to the state and to the entire naion.”

Tá an scannan feichte agam. I have seen the film.

For the rest of class we worked on plurals, based on a handout Nick gave us.
