The opening hymn today in church was St. Patrick’s Breastplace. The English translation and the current tune are quite modern, but the Gaelic words were ancient in colgaffneyis time, originally in Old Irish.

Linguistic note: You can see here that Old Irish did not follow the caol le caol agus leathan le leathan, “slender with slender and broad with broad” rule that is so fundamental to spelling in the modern language.

I have not yet found a modern Irish or Scottish Gaelic version of the hymn, although Gaelic Prayers and Irish Rosary Prayers have some other important Christian texts. Also, it may be buried somewhere in here, something I really need to explore someday.
