Following up on Cory Doctorow on Apple, Doctorow has written again about Apple in Plenty of room at the bottom (of the tech stack), the key point being:
Apple’s security model works well. To the extent that Apple is both benevolent and competent, it makes products that are safe and reliable. But this model fails horribly, because any time Apple decides to trade off its customers’ privacy, safety, or utility for its own priorities, those customers are rendered defenseless by Apple’s total control:
Also:
Being an Apple customer is like being in a 24/7 BDSM relationship…without a safe-word. Maybe you like the control Apple exerts over your life most of the time, but if they ever start to hurt you, there’s no way to make them stop:
Doctorow is very much opposed to “Big Tech,” e.g. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc. So am I. I was sickened when I learned about the CEOs of those companies kissing the posterior of the Tangerine Palpatine. Smaller companies are different. After bashing Apple he writes quite positively about his experience witn Framework laptops. He is also uses Ubuntu Linux and is quite happy with it and Canonical, the company behind it.
I have never used a Framework laptop, but if I can find one cheap enough I will probably buy it. I have been using Ubuntu Linux for years, and in fact am writing this on a Ubuntu system. I am quite happy with it. I have looked at other Linux systems, but my daily driver is Ubuntu.
