Five Items: Correct using the genitive

  1. Tógadh an teach ar bharr an cnoc chnoic.
    The house is built on
    top of the hill.

    tóg built, raise aut. tógadh /to:gu:/

  2. Beidh ár seanathair ag ceartú do chuid choda Gaeilge.
    Our grandfather will
    correct your Irish.

    cuid part, share, portion gen. coda
    Gaeilge Irish Already a genitive.

  3. Tá an t-oileán an-fhuar, de réir an teirmiméadar teirmiméadair.
    The island is very cold,
    according to the thermometer.

    de réir according to takes genitive

  4. Is fearr leis an ngirseach an saghas seo an tseacláid na seacláide.
    The
    young girl prefers that kind of chocolate

    Is fearr le X X prefers
    saghas kind, sort + gen.
    cineál kind, species, sort + gen.
    sórt sort, kind, variety

    • Note that the definite article in an expression like “the X of the Y” only appear once in Irish, in the
      middle position.

  5. Cá bhfuil an príomhchathair an tír na tíre?
    Where is the capital
    city of the country?

Game

It took a while to figure out how this game (another of Wes’s creations) worked, but it was actually quite
simple once we understood it. Quite a bit of vocabulary. Being married to a
fiber artist helped.
