Busy Saturday

  1. Edited, printed, and mailed the hard copy edition of colgaffneyis newsletter.
  2. Tried to blacken some rivets. I have to repair the shoulder straps for one of colgaffneyis breastplates, which is blackened to resist rust. This is period correct–shining armor would not remain so for long. So I am trying to blacken some of my rivets to match. I heated them in oil in an almost sealed jar in our Weber grill in a charcoal fire (Did not want to try this in the kitchen!). This had some effect, but not enough and left the rivets greasy. So I burnt off the remaining oil (I like to get in touch with my inner pyro). The rivets are black now. The question is whether they will stay black.
  3. Mounted a 12-foot cedar pole in a corner of our back deck. Lashed it to the deck railing with a rope. We have a hops plant growing below that corner of the deck. Only it is no longer below the deck. It is above the deck railing and looking for a place to climb. Hence the pole.
  4. Removed some modifications I had made to my Roy Underhill tool tote. I had put in some compartments in one side to organize tools. They really did not help and looked badly out of place. So I took them out. Since I did not want to destroy the tote this was a lot of work. I had built them in solidly.
  5. Finished unpacking stuff from the two previous weekends camping with colgaffneyis. In the middle of this I found my best Swiss Army knife. This knife is a geek special. Among other virtues it is the smallest I have seen with both a Phillip’s screwdriver and a corkscrew.
  6. Finished–completely–the cloth hose I was working on last night. They are ready for our next event with colgaffneyis. It felt good to finish this, and I am thinking about another sewing project from the patterns by kass_rants (No affiliation–just a satisfied customer).
