At this point we played a Halloween logic game as Gaeilge. Familiar sort. Six kids,

identified. Six costumes, identified. Each kid got a different amount of candy. The amounts were

specified. We were given a bunch of clues and had to match the kids to the costumes and the amounts

of candy. Quite standard fare, once you got past the language.


Copula–past/subjunctive tense

Is (present). Ba + lenite (past).

Ar bhanríon í Máire?
Was Maire a queen?

Nár bhanríon í Máire?
Wasn’t Maire a queen?

Ba bhanríon í Máire?
Maire was a queen.

Níor bhanríon í Máire?
Maire was not a queen.


Special forms before vowels

Arbh aisteoir í Síle?
Was Sheila an actress?

Nárbh aisteoir í Síle?
Wasn’t Sheila an actress?

B’aisteoir í Síle.
Sheila was an actress

Why am I doing these notes? Actually, it follows quite logically:

  1. Will K strongly encourages us to review our notes the first day or two after each class.
  2. My reviewing can be done in part, and made more useful in the long run, by copying my notes into

    a more legible form.

  3. If I am going to be typing them, I might as well do it in a place where they will get backed up

    and not lost.

  4. Having gotten that far, it is trivial to share them.
