Saturday

I slept 12 hours last night. I was slowly waking up a little after 9:30 when the phone rang. One of my co-workers. The poor guy had to get something done, by management decree, and had some questions for me. I helped him as best I could, knowing that I was going to have a better Saturday than he would.

After breakfast I went to the shop. mia_mcdavid had asked me to make a case for colgaffneyis new porcelain water jug, which currently travels in a cardboard box. With a lot of time, and some money, I am sure I could make something quite period correct. Short on both, I decided to make to with what was on hand, and count on paint, etc., to obscure my sins. I ripped a 4’x4′ piece of 1/2″ plywood into the sides, top, and bottom. All this was done with a hand saw; I got my exercise today. I added some cleats to hold the thing together, not wanting to take the time for proper joinery. No power tools: Even the drilling for the pilot holes, and countersinking the screws, was done by hand.

One side of the plywood, which I decided would be the inside, was very rough. After some thought about sanding and paint, I decided simply to cover it with fabric. I had some suitably tough canvas handy. This seems to be working quite well; I did the bottom and three sides today, and should easily finish it tomorrow.

The work was interrupted in the afternoon–we went to a wedding reception for two of our friends from colgaffneyis. It was the first time I had been to a lesbian wedding reception. It was really very much like a straight wedding reception, except, not surprisingly, that most of the guests were women. Most, but by no means all–I did not feel out of place. What was odd was that I was one of the very few men present who actually danced. Even the three other guys from colgaffneyis dance guild were absent from the floor during the event.
