Went out for a 2-mile run this morning, just to get in some exercise. First real running I have done in a while, but my knees survived.
I spent about four hours today working for my employer. Fortunately I could do everything from home. It is most of the work I have to do to switch the Business Intelligence databases to a new set of clustered SQL Servers. I had done my preparations yesterday, and it went almost exactly according to plan. The only real reason it took so long was because I had to back up several large databases on one of the old servers, copy the those backups to the new machines, and restore them there. Just an issue of sheer volume. Basic DBA stuff, and I had scripted the entire procedure in advance, so there was not a lot of thinking involved today. The whole job actually could have been done tomorrow, but I wanted to get it out of the way. The other members of the team will have a lot to do then, so I wanted to be done and out of their way.
Meanwhile, while I was dutifully obedient to Bill Gates on my employer’s computer, I was installing Slackware Linux version 11 on my personal machine right next to it. This went OK. I still have a little configuration to do, but I have internet connectivity now and can do all my day-to-day tasks. This was long overdue. On the plus side, rather than upgrade I did an install on to an empty machine. It has been several releases, and hence upgrades, so I it was really time to clean house.
While I was doing all this in the basement, colgaffneyis was having a meeting about baking bread upstairs. I looked in a few times, and tasted some of the experimental results. They were still talking when I finished–goddesssif has done a lot of work on this. I sat in on some of the discussion but eventually retired for a nap.
