Post holiday, and post party…. not a lot of accomplishments, except for my job and coping with family responsibilities. And a little computer work….
I am enjoying my Nokia 770. It really does do what I want it to. It is also a functional Linux computer, and quite a few Linux apps will run on it. I have downloaded and installed several of these, cheerfully ignoring the warnings about how this could render the device non-functional. In fact, at one point I really did total it–the machine would not boot properly. Well, I found clear documentation about reflashing the firmware, and I was back up an hour or so later, and back to tinkering with it. I am working up the nerve to get root–more flashing required.
Tonight at home I upgraded Lilah, my primary Linux machine, to the latest version of Slackware, running kernel 2.4.32. Sometime soon I will be trying a 2.6.x kernel on Drusilla, my test machine. That will be harder, and may trash the system. That is why I have a test system.
I can afford this because I do not generally use current hardware. I paid $75 for Lilah (a Pentium III) last summer. Drusilla is a P II I got for a similar sum a year or two back. Faith (Mia’a primary machine) is a P III. We also have Darla (which I am using now) and Angelus, which are P 166’s. James has the only P IV (purchased new last summer) in the house.
Non-computer stuff: I am reading Hayes-McCoy, Scots Mercenary Forces in Ireland: 1565-1603. The grandparents of some of our personae in colgaffneyis may have been among these. I am finding the connections of the Highland Scots with their fellow Gaels in Ireland to be fascinating, and essential to understanding the Highland society of the 17th century.
