Home Computing updates

I retired Tyrone, the P3 computer in the dining room and its CRT monitor. My little Eee PC now sits there when I am not taking it out on the road.

Back at my desk I retired another CRT, by replacing a 2 port KVM switch with a four port one, shared by my two systems and my employer’s. Next paycheck or so I will replace the CRT, and the CRT at mia_mcdavid‘s desk by LCD monitors. I also need to get mia_mcdavid‘s from her P3 system (the last in the house) to the P4 she is now using most of the time.

We are watching for a free electronic recycling event in the area, the sooner the better. The pile of old equipment in garage, already large, may not fit in our station wagon after the above mentioned changes.

As I wrote earlier, I had upgraded my two Ubuntu systems to version 10.04 (“Lucid Lynx”). Monday night I reinstalled 10.04 on both of them, so as to get clean systems without any cruft left over from the previous installs. I was somewhat reluctant to do this, since I will have to reinstall some software and do some reconfiguration on both systems.

So far Lucid Lynx is looking pretty good: The USB mounting problem and the logon issue I had experienced in the previous version (“Karmic Koala”) are gone. I may still change the GRUB configuration. I like watching all the boot messages. It is sometimes useful and always gives me a sense that something is happening.
