A water main burst on the 14th story of the building where I work, flooding that floor and several floors below. I think a couple elevators were knocked out as well–elevator service was quite slow all day. I work on the 19th floor so I was not otherwise affected, though I think I could detect a slight smell of wet carpet in the lobby. When the elevators going up or down stopped on the affected floors the stench was overwhelming. We could also see, and hear, the large fans that were being used to dry the carpets. On 14 and 13 the damage extended several inches up the baseboards.
All of this is quite familiar. I have seen, and dealt with, water damage before, more often than I would wish. However, I had thought of it as a problem for basements. It was not what expected to find 14 stories up in downtown Minneapolis.
