With driving Tom around so much in recent weekends I did have the presence of mind to save a few gas receipts and note the corresponding odometer readings. Our ’93 Ford Escort wagon got 31 mpg in a day of mostly highway driving. The ’92 Geo Prizm sedan, over several days of more urban driving, managed 28.5 mpg–better than I had expected. A modern hybrid could do much better than either, but they cost real money. Also, my numbers are based on actual measurements; they are not EPA estimates.
