On Iraq, I got a fairly consistent result across the board. Just about everyone said that they thought the situation was “very sad” (or some variation on that theme) and that they hoped it would be “over soon.” The truly telling part was that I didn’t run into a single person who took off like a rocket to one end of the hyperbole spectrum or the other. There wasn’t a single person enraged about how “George Bush lied!” and “Imperialist dreams of Empire!” and neither was there a single person blaring about “We must defeat the terrorist, islamofascist bastards over there so they won’t attack us here!” or “the Godless liberals are undermining our country!” or “The Fascist neocons are out to enslave us all!” Nothing like that. Just sadness over the war dead, worries about stability, and a general sense that everyone hoped that it would end and things would get back to normal.

In short… not a single screaming partisan in the bunch and they have no clue what’s going on in the blogosphere. I don’t have any conclusions to draw from this, except to say that we may all be preaching to the choir on whichever side we favor, and really not doing much to influence opinion in the majority of the electorate. I realize it’s a completely unofficial “poll” and a very small sample taken from a single, tiny geographical region, but I’m willing to bet you’d find similar results all over the country, particularly in more rural areas where less people are computer addicts.
